Our procurement headquarters in Switzerland handles all green coffee (raw materials) procurement for the Group. Switzerland is also the center of our global knowledge base for anything to do with green coffee quality, accessing raw materials, logistics and coffee blends.
As part of our coffee procurement operations, the headquarters in Switzerland works to promote various issues associated with fair trade in coffee, and sustainable coffee production processes. We believe that coffee production processes can only be sustainable when proper deals are in place with employees being acknowledged and their rights being upheld at all times.
We also perceive saving energy and protecting the environment as part of the ongoing sustainable production of coffee.
We recently joined the 4C “Common Code for the Coffee Community Association” initiative, a global organization working to promote fair trade in the "mainstream" green coffee chain, and to raise the quantity of coffee meeting the basic standards of proper dealings, civil rights, protection of the environment and the economy.
Over the past few years we have been purchasing coffee that meets the above standards. In March 2008, we acquired 1000 metric tons of green coffee from distributors associated with the 4C organization, and intend to increase these quantities in the future. We hope that as a leading and significant coffee producer in the global market, our taking this path will positively impact the economy and business arena we operate in. We also hope that market conditions will allow us to acquire more sustainable coffee operations in the future.
